Diwali or Deepavali is a festival of lights as per Hindu calendar. Diwali is a five day Hindu festival which occurs on the fifteenth day of Kartika. Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps" and the celebration is often referred to as the Festival of Lights. During this time, homes are thoroughly cleaned and windows are opened to welcome Laksmi, goddess of wealth. Candles and lamps are lit as a greeting to Laksmi. Gifts are exchanged and festive meals are prepared during Diwali.

Because there are many regions in India, there are many manifestations of the Diwali festival. In at least one area, the festival begins with Dhanteras, a day set aside to worship Laksmi. In the Indian culture, wealth is not viewed as a corruptive power. Instead, a wealthy person is considered to have been rewarded for good deeds of a past life.

On the second day Kali, the goddess of Strength, is worshipped. This day also focuses on abolishing laziness and evil.

On the third day (the last day of the year in the lunar calendar), lamps are lighted and shine brightly in every home. The lamp symbolizes knowledge and encourages reflection upon the purpose of each day in the festival. The goal is to remember the purpose throughout the year.

The fourth day of Diwali falls on the first day of the lunar New Year. At this time, old business accounts are settled and new books are opened. The books are worshipped in a special ceremony and participants are encouraged to remove anger, hate, and jealousy from their lives.

On the final day (Balipratipada) of the festival, Bali, an ancient Indian king, is recalled. Bali destroyed the centuries old philosophies of the society. However, in addition to this, he is remembered for being a generous person. Thus, the focus of this day is to see the good in others, including enemies.

Because there is no one universally accepted Hindu calendar, this holiday may be celebrated on a different date in some parts of India, but it always falls in the months of October or November.

In Hinduism, across many parts of India and Nepal, it is the homecoming of Rama after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over Ravana. In the legend, the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (dĭpa), thus its name: deepavali.

Exist Or Does Not Exist - God, Tantra, Evil Spirit. One day in my office, a group of eight, in the lunch hour, started dicussing this and that topic, nothing specific. Then suddenly our discussion turned to the topic called God, Tantra, Evil Spirit. Few said, God exists but else are just baseless, some said super-natural power exists can be of any form and rest said nothing is there like any power or something.

I was in the team of super natural power. One of my colleague said, people often do black magic with bad intensions to destroy relationship and all.

The topic gradually was becoming interesting and more interesting... At the end it became very controversial. It didn't end yet... It was kept open as the majority was confused.... Ha ha ha...

Tour To PanchKedar - True Story Of A Friend Tammy

Tammy aka Tanmoy. A very true story of a friend named Tammy. It’s a very interesting story for me. A friend, colleague, who is very much into trekking, had this experience while his tour to PanchKedar, a hill of five peaks or five Kedars. Tammy, I usually call him with this name, went to Panch Kedar in last year with two of his close friends. Before starting out his trip tale, I must say few things before. Before going for the trip he bought a new shoe which he wore and got accustomed in Kolkata.

Now finally let’s start the tour…

Tammy with two of his friends, all had rook sack filled with water bottle, torch, regular wears, and other necessary things, were doing masti while traveling. In the meantime while trekking, Tammy got hurt in his knee, still didn’t stop trekking. Quite impressive I must say. They were on their way to visit Madhya Maheshwar Mandir, one amongst the five Kedars, situated at 11000 / 12000 feet altitude.

Tammy and his friends ultimately reached the Mandir with much pain in his knees and their feet were by then stressed and swollen. They took rest there and in the next morning gave Puja, had their heavy breakfast and then again started to come down the hill. They started just after breakfast so that they could cover the greater distance within the daylight.

Tammy’s leg needed at least 3 – 4 days rest to get cured. His friends asked him to take rest and said him that they will start altogether next day. Very good friends they are, The Three Musketeers. He denied taking rest as he didn’t want to mess up the trip. So they started their trek again.

Tammy with much pain in his knees was trekking down. They were almost 6000 feet down. Suddenly his shoes stopped giving comfort to his feet. He wore before and they were not that much new. But as he trekked for so long, his new shoes became a problem. Since it was a dense hilly forest throughout the way, they didn’t find any tea stall or rest house till then. So, they kept on trekking. The path was not that smooth. The hill was very steep and the way was narrow. It was around 4.30 pm. Sun sets earlier in hilly areas. So it was almost dark. They found a wild pig coming down. They held breathe and stopped for a while with their back at the wall side. They kept on watching the wild and it passed across them. They closed their eyes and said “Thank God”.

They started to trek again. It was darker.

Suddenly, Tammy and his friends found a beam of light coming out of somewhere. They went nearer and found it a tea stall. Tammy was happy now. His leg was almost senseless by then. He now opened up his shoes and found his feet were swollen. One of the nails of his right feet was already topsy-turvy and was bleeding heavily. They had tea, biscuits, snacks, water, and took rest for few hours. The chaye-wala said that they can book a rest house which is 3 / 4 km away. Two of his friends went to book the rest house and Tammy started up his journey alone.

It was much darker by then… no one around. Tammy was all alone. A little boy of the chaye-wala was only there with him. He kept on telling him stories about the wild life of the hilly areas.

Suddenly Tammy saw a big black dog was following them. He was scared. But the dog didn’t harm them. The dog went all the way along with them. Tammy by now saw his friends waiting for him. They waived hands. Tammy joined them. The little boy went inside the rest house to keep his rook sack, Tammy turned back to see the dog. But he was surprised. He didn’t find the dog anywhere. There was no other way around that the dog could take. Tammy was surprised. He says still now that the dog was there to protect him from other wild animals.

French Toast for four slices:
2 eggs, beaten
1 TBSP syrup
1/4 cup cream
2 TBSP melted butter
2 TBSP Grand Marnier
Mix all of the above ingredients together and dip bread in mixture, coating both sides. Melt another tablespoon of butter (or use canola oil) in a skillet on low heat. Brown the bread on both sides, adding butter as necessary. Serve with warm maple syrup and top with whipped cream.

Scrambled Eggs (Oven):
(6- 12 servings)
• 12 eggs
• 3/4 cup skim or 1% low-fat milk
• 1 teaspoon salt, optional
• 1/4 teaspoon pepper, optional
In large bowl, beat together eggs and milk with salt and pepper, if desired, until blended. Pour egg mixture into lightly greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan. Place in preheated 350° F oven. As mixture begins to set, after about 7 minutes, pull out oven rack and gently draw an inverted pancake turner completely across bottom and sides of pan, forming large, soft curds. Continue baking. Repeat drawing a few more times until eggs are thickened and no visible liquid egg remains, about 12 to 15 minutes more. Do not stir constantly.

Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year. This year Mother’s Day is on 10th May, 2009. Mother’s Day is celebrated globally these days to show love and respect to all mothers. It’s the day to show gratitude to mothers for giving us love, support, and affection. Mother’s Day is the day to show respect to them for giving us life.
This year in Jan, I became mother for the first time. Now I came to know the meaning of motherhood more perfectly. And so, though Moms Day is far away, I am already planning for a special Mother’s Day gift or gift ideas for my mother.
Me and my brother have some plans but you guys can suggest me some more!!!

I have a plan to decorate my mom’s room the night before Mothers Day after she falls asleep. My mom loves flowers a lot especially yellow roses. Then will bake a cake. Holi is known as the festival of colors. It is celebrated on the day of the full moon (Purnima or Poornima) in early March every year. Holika purnima is also called Hutasani. It is the celebration of the arrival of spring - the season of hope and new beginnings and marks the re-kindling of the spirit of life according to the Bhagvad Gita. Holi is a day to celebrate with friends and neighbors. People perform havan and offer to the Gods the new grains that are harvested. The history of the origin of Holi goes back to Hindu mythology when Lord Krishna killed the demon "Madhu" in ancient Braj or modern Mathura in U.P.
Amongst India's innumerable festivals, Holi ranks as the most colorful. It celebrates the arrival of spring and death of demons Holika; it is a celebration of joy and hope. Holi provides a refreshing respite from the mundane norms as people from all walks of life enjoy themselves. In a tight knit community, it also provided a good excuse for letting off some steam and settling old scores, without causing physical injury.
Twin towns of Nandagow (where Lord Krishna grew up) and Barsana (where Shri Radha grew up), near Mathura in the state of Uttar Pradesh start off the celebrations a week earlier than the rest of India. Men and women of Vraj clash in a colorful display of battle of the sexes.Men of Nandagow raid Barsana with hopes of raising their flag over Shri Radhikaji's temple. They receive a thunderous welcome as the women of Barsana greet them with long wooden sticks. The men are soundly beaten as they attempt to rush through town to reach the relative safety of Shri Radhikaji's temple. Men are well padded as they are not allowed to retaliate. In this mock battle the men try their best not to be captured. Unlucky captives can be forcefully lead away, thrashed and dressed in female attire before being made to dance.The next day, men of Barsana reciprocate by invading Nandagow. Pink and white powders called abir and gulal cloud the sky as frenzied men and women revel on the streets. A naturally occurring orange-red dye, kasuda, is used to drench all participants. The state tourist board has set up excellent vantage points for the public to ensure safety of the spectators who flock to watch the revelry. A large open ground, on the outskirts of the town is specially set aside for the most magnificent display of the festivities.The temples in Vrindavan celebrate the festival with great guesto. The renowned temple of Bakai-Bihari worshipped by the 15th century saint Haridas, is at the centre of the festivities. Clouds of pink and white descend upon the pilgrims.

I would like to share my first pregnancy experience... You will be surprised to know that I had no pregnancy symptoms throughout the whole period. I had learnt that am pregnant at the 5th month. Everything was normal and so I did not think of going to the doctor. It's like an unbelievable experience to me... believe it or not!
My daily routine was to wake up early, make some breakfast, had a fresh bath, had breakfast with my husband and then set to go for the work. My hubby used to drop me at my office. One such fine morning a colleague of mine told me that I had put on a few kilos, she felt suddenly. I was upset as I am always very figure and health conscious. Moreover after few days me and my husband were about to go for a holiday trip. I made up my mind to shed those extras before leaving for the trip ... but just 10 days were in my hand. After office, I used to come home and then started spending time doing various exercises - ran on my treadmill for about 1 hour for those 10 days. But I found myself same after 10 days. Anyways went for the trip...Enjoyed there ... That was like our second honeymoon in 2 and half years of our marriage. Came back safe and happily. Joined office just the next day. After a week or so I started feeling a bit tired and stressed out. Asked my husband to take me to my gynae for just a general check up ... thought he would prescribe me some vitamins and stress relief pills. The doc asked me to go for a USG immediately as he felt that I might have conceived. I went for it immediately. Both of us were surprised to read that I was 5 months pregnant already. I was shocked as I did not get a hint of it through 5 months...
This is how I learnt I was pregnant...
Anyways now am a proud mother of a healthy sunny boy who is just 1 month and few days old!!!
World have changed for me to the best! I thank God for protecting me and my child!

In the Western Christian calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days before Easter. It falls on a different date each year, because it is dependent on the date of Easter; it can occur as early as February 4 or as late as March 10.
Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned. In the liturgical practice of some churches, the ashes are mixed with the Oil of the Catechumens (one of the sacred oils used to anoint those about to be baptized), though some churches use ordinary oil. This paste is used by the clergyman who presides at the service to make the sign of the cross, first upon his own forehead and then on each of those present who kneel before him at the altar rail. As he does so, he recites the words: "Remember (O man) that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

California's legislature approved a plan Thursday morning to close the $42 billion budget deficit of California through steep cuts and new taxes, after state leaders corralled the last Republican vote needed to end a 15-week partisan impasse that has battered an already-crippled state economy.
The CA State budget has finally been passed after one of the longest Senate lock downs in CA history.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will likely sign the plan by this weekend, opening the way for officials to restart construction projects and send tax refunds that had been delayed to keep the state from running out of cash.
The original budget proposal -- a set of nearly 30 bills -- was hammered out in closed-door negotiations by Mr. Schwarzenegger and the four majority and minority legislative leaders.
The changes made after negotiations with Mr. Maldonado include measures calling for the California to hold open primary elections and to stop pay raises for lawmakers in years the state faces a budget shortfall. Both reforms would have to be approved by voters, however. Legislative leaders also agreed to strip out the gas-tax increase.

Valentines Day Crafts For Kids (Handmade Cards)

What you'll need:
8.5 x 11 construction paper or card stock in various colors and/or patterns
Valentine and/or heart stickers
scissors
pinking shears (optional)
glue stick or white craft or school glue
glitter (pink, red, white)
How to make it:
Begin by cutting a piece of construction paper or card stock into four equal pieces.
Fold quartered paper in half to make a card.
For the easiest version, appropriate for preschoolers, use stickers to decorate or cut out hearts from a different color of construction paper or card stock to glue onto your cards. Experiment with different patterns, florals look great contrasted with stripes on a solid background.
Younger children love glitter! Use a bottle of glue to “draw” on a heart or phrase (such as “Be Mine”). Sprinkle glue generously with pink, red or white glitter and let dry over night. Tap off excess glitter when completely dry.
For the older set, let them use pinking sheers to cut out heart shapes and glue onto cards. Again, use contrasting patterns and colors to create a charming design.
Once glue is dry, cards may curl up a little. Place cards between the pages of a heavy cookbook or phone book and leave over night.
Tips:
Finding the perfect paper. Card stock is available in literally hundreds of different designs. The scrap-booking aisle at your local craft store has individual sheets or pads of various colors and patterns. Caution, these papers can get costly, watch for sales or purchase these papers with other projects in mind as well. Construction paper is inexpensive and children love it just as much.
Save on stickers. Discount department stores, such as Wal Mart and Kmart carry a large variety of stickers. You may also want to check your local dollar store.

Almond Champagne Fondue:

8 ounces Gruyere cheese

4 ounces Swiss cheese

1 tablespoon cornstarch

5 ounces brie cheese

1 cup champagne or white wine

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

Dash ground nutmeg

French bread cubes, apple slices Shred both cheeses and toss with cornstarch. Cut rind off brie and cut cheese into small chunks.
Heat wine in a heavy, 3-quart saucepan. Bring just to simmer over medium heat; do not boil.
Reduce heat and gradually add shredded cheeses, then brie, stirring constantly in zigzag motion until cheese melts.
Add almond flavoring and nutmeg. Continue stirring and simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Do not boil.
Serve in a fondue pot warmed over a candle or canned heat. Use sturdy bread chunks and apple slices for dipping.

Ingredients
Quenelles:
10 large egg whites
1 each vanilla bean
2 ounces sugar
1 quart water or 1 qt milk

Caramel :
5 tablespoons sugar
5 tablespoons water

Methods
In a large bowl, whip the egg whites until they are very stiff. Add the vanilla bean paste.
Add sugar (amount of sugar varies - it has to bind the eggs).
In a large saucepan, heat (but do NOT boil) milk or water.
Shape the beaten egg whites into quenelles and float them in the liquid to poach gently.
After 2 minutes, turn the egg puffs with a spoon dipped in cold water.
Cook for 3 more minutes, then remove to a baking pan.
Drain the pan, and briefly reserve the quenelles.
Boil the sugar and water in a saucepan until it forms caramel.
Scoop Creme Anglaise into the bottoms of your serving bowls and then place a quenelle in each bowl.
Sprinkle with roasted almonds and top with caramel sauce. Garnish with fresh fruit of the season.

Ingredients:

Bread slices with edges - 2 to 4
Tomato - tiny slices - 1
Potato - tiny square slices - 1 to 2
Onion - Sliced - 1
Green Chili - chopped - 1 to 2
Sugar - for taste
Salt - for taste
Oil
Green Dhania Leaves /Coriander Leaves(optional) - Chopped
Haldi Powder - a pinch or two.

Preparation:
In frying pan –

Heat 3 table spoons of oil.
Add potato slices and fry for few seconds till it softens a bit.
Add onion slices to that and fry a bit.
Add sliced tomatoes and green chili.
Dip the bread slices in a bowl of water and take out.
Crumble those slices into tiny pieces.
Add those slices to the frying pan.
Add a pinch of salt & sugar for taste and haldi powder for color.
Stir for a minute.
Cover it for 2 minutes.

Garnish it with chopped green dhania leaves. Now it’s ready to serve.

Note: If you want you can even add few ground nuts and peas while stirring.

While planning for a birthday party, birthday cakes are the foremost thing to be listed. Many such recipes are available online or in recipe books. But here is a cake recipe which I make very often and is a result of bit experimentation but tastes really good. Still I couldn’t name the cake. If you have any suggestions please mention.

Birthday recipe:

2-3 cups flour
3-4 tsp baking powder
1 tbs vanilla essence
1 cup butter
½ cup sugar
3-4 eggs
½ cup milk

Batter all the ingredients very well. It’s very important to batter well. I usually do it with my hand mixer, you can use blender. Take a baking pan (which shape you would like the cake to be) and distribute some butter evenly thoroughly or you can use a greased baking pan. Then pour the batter in that container and put that in the oven for

30 minutes at 190 deg centigrade. Do not open the oven in the first 15 minutes.

The cake is ready to serve and eat. You can do some icing on the cake by mixing some icing sugar with white butter in a separate container and then put that in the icing cone and you are ready for icing or you can just sprinkle some icing sugar over the cake.

Last weekend was my mom’s birthday. I baked this cake, wished her with some beautiful birthday ecards and gifted a wrist watch which she really appreciated.

I remember my 25th Birthday, Silver Birthday, Twentififth Birthday Celebration, or Birthday At 25 .
It was filled with so much fun and surprises. The night before my 25th
birthday, I had a tiff with my brother about a very small thing. I felt
very low and thought nobody remembers my birthday, otherwise there
would have been the party discussion and not the tiff.

In the morning as I woke up I found my room decked up with birthday balloons,
teddies, birthday cards, new curtains and flowers. I was so surprised
to see those. As I came out of my room, I found the gang of my friends
standing with lots of gifts and started singing birthday songs.
I looked at my mom; she was ready with a cake and a smile. She hugged
me and wished me. Everyone in the house wished me but my brother was
nowhere in the house. I asked my mom about him and she said he is just
in his room. I went to his room…, and found a lovely gift basket
on his bed. I was curious to peep into that. A small cute kitten was
peeping from that. I was overwhelmed with joy and tears rolled down my
eyes with happiness. I hugged my brother and thanked him for this
special gift.

He
said that the last night tiff was preplanned so as to surprise me with
so many things. Starting from my room décor, calling my friends
to the baking of the birthday cake was all done by him, mom and dad said to me.

My friends then gave me birthday bumps.
We all enjoyed a lot, had yummy food cooked by my mom, had fun all day
long and by dinner dad took me, my brother and mom for a lovely dinner.
Dad gave me a nice diamond earring as a birthday gift and told me how much they love me.

I was completely spellbound. I didn't find any words to say. Just hugged
them and said I love them more than anyone in this world. They are
really the most precious people in my life.

(These are absolutely my own experimented tips - for nothing specific)

After a stress full day, take a warm water bath. Add 10-12 drops of lemon juice to the last bucket of water and then bath with that. I bet you will feel absolutely relaxed and will be ready again to start up with freshness.

To relax yourself after a tiring day - have a cup of warm Green Tea. This will help you rejuvenate.

Soak your feet in warm water and dilute some amount of kitchen salt in that to relax your feet.

To smoothen your lips - rub an apricot scrubber generously on your lips to get that smooth lustrous red lips.

While cooking, if the food gets slightly burnt, you get a smell. If the food tastes right but smell is there, then you can go for this. Boil water in a container and then place the container containing that food over it (be careful that it doesn't drop in). Wait for 4-5 mins and the magic happens. That burnt smell goes away instantly.

If you are scared of dreams almost everyday, then you can do this. Write with your index finger "God be with me" under your pillow and then go to sleep. It always helps me.

To maintain the glow of your artificial jewelery, dust some body talc on it and keep it in place.

To keep the glow of artificial stones, apply a coat of your transparent nail enamel.

To keep a candle burn longer, dip half of the candle in water for 5-6 minutes (but don't dip its tip) before lighting up.

If you have no time to put moisturizer all over your body after shower then put few drops of body oil in a mug of water and make sure you avoid your head while pouring the water on your body.
